Polo Application of a lower trophic ecosystem model coupled with an ocean circulation model allows us to derive a time series of estimated plankton biomass for waters around Kure Atoll, Pearl & Hermes Atoll and Midway Islands, over the period 1964–2006. This time series shows considerable interannual and decadal variation in productivity, and changes in recent years that are coherent with observed changes at higher trophic levels. Further the model results show that the change in productivity can be viewed from the perspective that the atolls, at the northern edge of the subtropical gyre, are situated at a strong physical, chemical and biological gradient. The gradient moves north and south seasonally and interannually resulting in changes in lower trophic level productivity around the atolls fixed in position. Variation in biome boundaries or gradients may be a key factor in ecosystem dynamics in many ecosystems located near such boundaries. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Research Article: Trophic dynamics analysis and ecosystem structure for some fish species of northern Oman Sea
In the present study, a trophic structure model for some fish species of the northern Oman Sea is developed through using mass balance modeling software, Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE). In this model, we simulated 16 functional groups spread across an area of 3998.20 km2 from 2017 to 2018. Mean trophic level in the area of the present study was 3.49. Values calculated for system omnivory and connect...
متن کاملApplication of TOPEX-POSEIDON satellite altimetry to simulate transport dynamics of larvae of spiny lobster, Panulirus marginatus, in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, 1993–1996
The spiny lobster, Panulirus marginatus, is endemic to the Hawaiian Archipelago and Johnston Atoll. The species is found throughout the archipelago and is the target of a trap fishery in the northwestern portion of the archipelago known as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). From the early 1980s to 1990, the majority of fishery catches came from two banks, Necker Island and Maro Reef, loc...
متن کاملHydrodynamics and water quality assessment of a coastal lagoon using environmental fluid dynamics code explorer modeling system
Ciénaga de Mallorquín is a coastal lagoon designated as a RAMSAR site due to its ecological regional and international importance. In this work, the environmental fluid dynamics code explorer modeling system was implemented to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of temperature, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand and nutrient levels, and assess the trophic status of Ciénaga de Mallo...
متن کاملDifferences in fish-assemblage structure between fished and unfished atolls in the northern Line Islands, central Pacific
We describe the abundance, biomass, size composition, and trophic structure of fish assemblages of shallow (10 m depth) fore reef habitats at 2 US Pacific atolls (Kingman, Palmyra) and 2 Kiribati-owned atolls (Tabuaeran, Kiritimati) in the northern Line Islands. Our characterization spans several coincident gradients (in human habitation and exploitation, latitude, and nutrient upwelling) from ...
متن کاملA comprehensive investigation of mesophotic coral ecosystems in the Hawaiian Archipelago
Although the existence of coral-reef habitats at depths to 165 m in tropical regions has been known for decades, the richness, diversity, and ecological importance of mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) has only recently become widely acknowledged. During an interdisciplinary effort spanning more than two decades, we characterized the most expansive MCEs ever recorded, with vast macroalgal commu...
